Year-to-Date (YTD)

Definition

Results from the start of the fiscal year through today, used to track progress against annual goals.

YTD numbers are what your CPA uses for tax planning and what lenders ask for between annual statements.

They are only meaningful against a plan or last year's YTD. Watch for: YTD profit used for tax planning before month-end adjustments, which can lead to under- or overpaying estimates.

Example

By the end of September, YTD net sales are $1.9M against a full-year budget of $2.8M, with Q4, your biggest quarter, still ahead.
